TOUR DESCRIPTION (Passage Map)

Our Kokopelli Trail mountain bike tour is our most popular. The 142-mile Kokopelli Trail that connects Fruita, CO to Moab, UT is a true desert classic. This diverse route snakes it’s way along the Colorado River on the first half of the ride (including some world-class singletrack early on), skirts it’s way around the north side of the La Sal Mountains, and finally spills riders down an incredible, must-do descent into Moab, UT. Along the way you’ll enjoy very comfortable campsites, ready and waiting for you, in some inspiring locations.

This self-guided mountain bike tour is challenging. Along the 142 miles you’ll climb over 10,000 total feet and many times face a variety of weather changes. That said, everyone who finishes our Kokopelli Trail mountain bike tour walks away with a sense of accomplishment that can be hard to find in this modern world!

We created this Kokopelli Trail mountain bike tour for those who don’t want a guide, don’t want to be supported during the week and generally just want their own self-serve adventure with a bit of logistical assistance. Each day we relocate a very deluxe camp setup (provided by Ready Camp) of (2) 10×10 canopies, full kitchen, dry firewood, camp chairs, fresh water, coolers of food and beverages (you purchase prior to trip) and all your personal gear like tents, bags and clothing. You can go as cheap or deluxe as you want on food, beverages and amenities!!

Arrival Day:

Riders should be prepared to meet us the night before in Fruita, CO to pickup coolers from Ready Camp to do your grocery and beverage shopping for your 4 days…

Day 1:

The trail starts out with a bang on some incredible singletrack, which very soon overlooks the mighty Colorado River. The trail peels away from the river a bit and parallels Mack Ridge for a spell where river views open back up as do stellar views into the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness to the south…

Day 2:

While not as stunning as Day One’s cliffs and canyons, the first half of Day Two delivers its own romance before arriving at Fish Ford midday…

Day 3:

Settle in – today is the hardest day of the trip. It’s incredibly gorgeous and includes some amazing transitions between desert and lower mountain forests, but it’s hard. Start your day climbing away from the Colorado River and toward Fisher Valley skirting Entrada Bluffs on the left…

Day 4:

Day four begins by finishing the climb to the top of paved Castle Valley Road. The Kokopelli Trail takes an abrupt right hand turn not far from the summit and experienced mountain bikers might recognize this area – you’ve joined the world-renowned Whole Enchilada ride. Descending down the trail you’ll take in views of Castle Valley and soon have the choice of staying on the Kokopelli Trail…

A – Coolers are stored behind Over the Edge Sports in downtown Fruita. CO

Q – How much gear can I pack?

A – Space is not infinite in our trailer. We ask that you pack smartly in one duffel, plus your tents and sleeping bag. Leave your bike stands, hibachi’s and bath tubs at home.

Q – What happens if I have a mechanical or injury and get stranded out there?

A – Our trips are truly self-guided and there is no Hermosa Tours extraction team! We suggest bringing a SPOT Messenger or satellite phone and know how to repair your own bike.

Q – What’s a good tire choice for this trip?

A – The Continental X-King is a great choice for this trip. Over the Edge in Fruita carries these tires and a lot more.

Q – What do I bring?

A – We supply a full kitchen, water, firewood, chairs, tables, etc. You’ll need your tent, sleeping bag, sleeping gear, bike, clothing and personal items.

Q – What’s the shower situation?

A – Beginning in 2014 we will have a gravity/solar shower on the trip. This works great for a quick rinse off and refresh.

Q – Where do I shop for food for this trip?

A – There is a City Market grocery store only one block from Over the Edge in Fruita, CO

Q – Can I rent a bike for this trip?

A – Yes you can. Over the Edge Sports in Fruita, CO carries a great selection.

Q – How do I navigate the route?

A – The Kokopelli Trail is pretty well marked, but we ask that you pick up the Fruita/Grand Junction and Moab East maps from Latitude 40 Maps. When the trip starts we will mark your maps and explain where the camps are located.

Q – Can we spend a day or two in Moab at the end of our trip and then get shuttled back to Fruita?

A – Yes and no. You’re welcome to stay in Moab, but the shuttle back to Fruita leaves on Sunday afternoon. There are numerous shuttle companies in Moab that can get you back to Fruita.
